Highlights: ran to embassy, slow internet is killing me today! Tried to celebrate Halloween at Irish bar with Brook & Lydia (= 2nd rain in Jakarta
Like yesterday, today was mostly an effort to get back on track with updated notes on ‘the adventures in Indonesia’. My laptop is my new right hand.
Taking a quick break, I ran up to the boss’s office at the embassy to check-in and give them an updated copy of my travel plans for the month of November & December.
Where I had once roped off a majority of the month for “being around” in Jakarta, I have now filled that time with 5 trips! A year sounds like a long time to be here,,, and for the first several months I thought there would be plenty of time to visit all the places I wanted to get out to… mapping my trips on a calendar made me realize how big Indonesia is, and how little time a year is to see it all, let alone the neighboring Southeast Asian countries I hope to visit (Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, et al…)
Well there was a rumor that today was Halloween somewhere in the world. Brook, Lydia & I felt more tricked than treated today. Our big effort to “do something” tonight amounted to dinner at an Irish pub in South Jakarta. I did see pics in the newspaper of kids dressed up for school,,, and I’m sure somewhere in the city (or country) there were Halloween parties going on,, but this year the 3 of us went out as disappointed Americans.
At the ball the other night, I was talking with Jo Richards & GySgt Tull about their housing situation. Jo had to cut the conversation to 30 seconds or less, so as not to spoil a great evening out getting upset again. Anyways- it seems the Marines here don’t really have a place they can all go for Thanksgiving… Insert Jonathan’s house & we have a solution. I will probably be romping through the countryside of Sumatra at the time, but I already plan on flipping Gunny Tull a set of keys, so the Marine Security Guards can have a place to throw a party, swim, relax & watch football all day on Thanksgiving. Marines have to take care of their own!
We are finally starting to see signs of the changing of the seasons. It rained for the 2nd time in Jakarta tonight.
