Highlights: Padang, hang out with security guards
I seemed to have really missed the boat here in Padang. There was a week-long culture festival that ended yesterday (I had no way of knowing about), and apparently the museums are all closed on Mondays. =/ hmmm.
Then I got to sit through a thundering rainstorm for about 40 minutes under a tarp, watching the roads flood before my eyes. Hmmm.
None of the biggest hotels have wireless internet for me to use, and I already discovered taxi cabs penchant for overcharging on “fixed rates” (they want $12 for getting into their cab & going down the block, according to one shady character who produced some bogus chart. I gave him $7 and told him to be happy he’s getting that much).
Fresh out of ideas, I wandered up to the security shack in front of Hotel Bumi Minang and chatted with those guys for almost 3 hours. Religion, politics, history… all fair game. Good guys.
