First stop, Monument to the struggle for Indonesian Independence.
It didn’t make the Lonely Planet (2004) list of sites worth visiting… I could say that it’s an awkward & imposing structure in the center of Palembang- but I’ll keep my opinions about its asthetics to myself. It is, however, completely dedicated to Indonesian heroes.
“Hero”, by the standard I’ve seen from Surabaya to Palembang, means anyone who fought the Dutch; particularly during the 1945-1949 struggle for independence. There was one photo of an older “hero”: Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II.
