A friend from Jakarta, mbak Indah, met us there, and took me around her hometown (Bendo). A home isn’t a traditional Javanese home if there aren’t kids running around everywhere, I think. Ha ha (= 3 generations live together here under 1 roof. As far as I can tell, I think Indah’s family represents well what life is like for most families here. Simple, happy when together, and warm hearted. There are 2 scooters between 11 people, one 10” TV, no refrigerator, running water enough to fill the basin in the bathroom & kitchen, and in their case, a few dusty billiard tables outside to bring in a little spending money.
