Highlights: Meeting the vice-governor of Yogya, oleh oleh shopping & video games
We were offered a rare & interesting official visit with the vice governor of Yogya this morning at his office on Jl. Malioboro. Sri Paduko Pakualam IX is a king in his own right… the official ruler of the smaller of the two kingdoms in the Yogyakarta province. The sultan of the larger kingdom (Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X) was away on business in Jakarta, and was originally scheduled to meet us as well.
The vice governor, aside from being born in the 1930s, and a chain smoker, was very kind to us and nice to be around; sharp witted yet humble. He talked with us for about as long as it took to get through 3 cigarettes.
As with many unique opportunities like this, it was an honor to be there,, and it was over before we knew it. We thought of all the penetrating questions we wished someone had asked on the bus-ride home. Ha ha…
