Leaving the mausoleum kicks you out immediately into his former presidential house & grounds. Half of it is off-limits to tourists; the other half is a showcase of two formal residences, his old cars (Peugot), the gardens and the stilt-house.

The first set of buildings are former French colonial buildings of the times; with their charmingly bright yellow walls with red or green brick accents and red tile roofs. He lived here for 4 years, before taking up residence in the simpler Stilt-house for a few years before war with the Americans started kicking up in 1965. The old man used to drive a Peugot & something that looks like a British car. Status symbols of the times, I’m sure.
The stilt-house is famous in it’s wooden simplicity and sparse furnishings.
