Highlights: PB, simulator, wiped out & in bed by 7:30
Uncle T & I had breakfast at another original PB diner: the Broken Yolk. Mmmm! It’s so good being around traditional breakfast food again.

Today is our last chance to see the sights around San Diego together, so I took him around Pacific Beach (PB), the part of San Diego I once called home for 3 years. With clouds overhead & a breeze kickin, 61° felt brisk. As soon as the sun came back out & the wind died down, it was t-shirt weather again. Even my New England hardened uncle had to admit a slight chill at one point. (= Indeed, SanDiego has dream winter weather by continental U.S. standards.
I had a simulator event this afternoon at Miramar. No messing around! I just checked-in yesterday, and already I’m on the schedule for a graded event. That’s awesome.
Well it’s good that the sim instructor didn’t expect too much out of me- I just got my books 24 hours ago.
A few things have changed in the aircraft since I last flew, namely the engine control system. It changes the start-up procedure just a little, and I’m seeing it for the first time today, but everything is just as I remember. It’s amazing how quickly muscle memory comes back to you. It’s been almost 3 years since I’ve climbed in the cockpit, and my hands knew where to go to find most of the switches.
The simulator, for those of you who are hearing this for the first time, is a replica aircraft cockpit, mounted on hydraulics with a 360° video screen. It’s a tool we use to practice just about anything we might experience in the aircraft: start-up & shut-down procedures, normal flying, emergencies of all kinds, and instrument approaches which allows us to fly safely into an airfield with the navigation equipment on board if clouds and bad weather prevent us from seeing the ground from the air.

It was fun getting back in the simulator and “flying” again. Jet lag immediately weighed in on me like 50lb sand bags as soon as I got home, and it was time for bed.
