The Champa Museum is on the southern edge of town, and prominent with it’s yellow walls & open structure. It is filled with Hindu relics from Champa temples in the area; notably My Son.
The Champa kingdom is one of the oldest recorded societies native to Vietnam, with Hindu temples dating to the 7th century, shifting to Buddhism in the 9th. It has a mixed history, but was once quite powerful. The majority of stone reliefs and sculptures in this museum represented the Hindu periods of Champas history… many statues of Shiva, his wife Uma, his son Ganesha; Brahma, Vishnu and others.
The My Son temples are now relics of what they once were, but there remain many ethnic Cham living in the region.
