We sat & talked with this family a while. The grandmother is the oldest woman in the family, thus the owner of the house. Her parents arranged her marriage when she was 18. She had 7 kids, one of whom died as an infant. Her husband died in 1998. Arranged marriages remain typical, but are becoming less frequent these days.
To marry, couples have to seek the consent of the village elder, usually an uncle or oldest brother of the most important matrilineal line in the village.
The cultural norms are dizzying.

From there we said goodbye & continued on towards Lake Singkarak. Taking a rest on the side of the road at a scenic spot, we were joined by a few colorful personalities, trapped in the bodies of 8-12 year old boys. Smoking away, and not yet 9 years old. Looks funny to me, but that’s typical here. Addicted before their 10th birthday. Normal.
