Highlights: visited Eli & Rusli’s (husband) kos today for a few hours & opened fasting with them at 6pm. It’s always rewarding and fun hanging out with local people here.
There was a buzz through the whole complex about the western guy who came to hang out with them for the afternoon. I wasn’t aiming to set any records, but I feel like the first to spend more than 30 seconds here. It was fun sitting down & talking with them about my efforts to learn their culture, language & religion.
There is a specific pattern to opening the fast: start with hot tea, then something sweet (usually a fruit blend of melon, coconut, and some kind of jello squares mixed in a drink), followed by rice & whatever you mix it with. (chicken tonight)
We all sat cross legged on the floor & ate with our fingers. Messy & delicious!
It was fun watching the kids play with their new hot-wheels set. I got them 8 cars, a little “garage”, and a separate truck + helicopter. I think the boys just became the most popular kids in the complex; all their friends came over, wanting to play too. Both the 3 & 5 year old felt some sort of boost in status, having a bule “mister” come over to play with them. Ha ha. It was funny to see them run over & grab my hand when I walked in.
