Highlights: meeting with Dean of Political Science Dept, meeting Nina’s friends, met mas Brook at UN party, Happy Puppy karaoke

I went to the computer lab at UGM campus & typed out a self-introduction letter for the dean of Fakultas Ilmu Politik, whom I had a meeting with at 11:00 a.m.

Relationships between the U.S. embassy & campuses like UGM were somewhat dropped after the violence following the separation of East Timor from Indonesia in 1999, and efforts to rebuild them have been described as ad-hoc.

One thing I’ve been learning about Indonesia & how business is done here, is how much relies on personal relationships, and developing a sense of knowing each other before useful cooperation really begins.

Anyways- I’m just another ad-hoc peg in the wheel, really- but I’ve spent & enjoyed some time here at UGM, and if I can meet some people, and work on establishing new ties between the embassy and UGM, then I’m happy to work on that.

That was, in a nutshell, the point of my meeting with Dr. Mohtar Mas’oed.

Very nice man. We talked for 2 hours.

Later in the afternoon, I picked up Nina & met some of her friends on UGM campus. There is a poetry performance of some kind next week that Nina & her friends are practicing for… we sat with them for about an hour.

In one corner of the straw mat there was ‘reading’ & memorizing going on,,, in the background- I was fielding probing, soft-ball questions from Nina’s friends. “So are you guys dating now?” hmm. Good question. wondering that myself. I guess we’ll find out later when we meet the parents!

Brook, my roommate, flew into Yogya today! Later in the evening, Nina & I jumped on our scooter & drove out to the UN earthquake-relief headquarters building to join him. There was a going-away party for a few UN staff. That, of course, meant free food… and Brook & Nina got to meet.

The clock was ticking, and I had to have Nina back to her Kos by 10:00pm,, so after maxing out the fun factor at the UN party, we invited Nana to join us for karaoke,,, and the 4 of us sang at Happy Puppy Karaoke for a couple hours.

Eh,, well… Nana & I sang for about 95% of it. We couldn’t get the shy ones out of their shell until the end (= it was still fun.
