I’ve met a few people with reserved feelings about this place which, on the surface, resembles a cultural amusement park. There are plaques everywhere reminding passers-bye who was responsible for constructing this place (former President Suharto); and as such- this represents his vision of what Indonesia should be like. After 32 years as President, it’s not surprising his mark was stamped unmistakably into Indonesia’s history. Some are fans, some aren’t- I think the issue was the selective writing of history & the temptation of leaders to write themselves in as perhaps a shade more significant or central than they were. For example, can Suharto write himself as a “founding father” of Indonesia’s independence, as it was that he was a junior officer at the time & didn’t come to power until 20 years later? I’m not expert enough yet to say either way, just interested in different perspectives.
