The water is said to have been 30-40 meters deep in this area! Holy cow,, that’s 1/3 of a football field,, or 90-120 feet!
Another interesting side note: almost all of the construction workers you see here come from Medan or Java. For whatever reason, carpentry & construction are considered “lowly work” amongst Acehnese men. Tanwir says the wages they make are low; and that most Acehnese men would rather work in an office or get an education. That response supports an unflattering stereotype I have heard about Acehnese men, where the women seem to work the hardest.
I thought this boat was huge,, perched where the roof of a house once was… until we got to the “electric ship”. No walls were holding this monster up. It was such an unusual sight seeing this barge, built as a floating power generator, sitting in the middle of a neighborhood 4km away from the coast,, like the Wizard of Oz house, fallen out of the sky. Unfortunately, there used to be 3 homes underneath it. Not sure about the occupants.
