Highlights: a/c systems class, 1st syllabus flight (113x), Ben’s out!
More systems class with SSgt Ruiz today,, and more crawling around the aircraft.
It’s funny to see new pilots trying to climb around the outside of the aircraft for the first time. The aft pylon, (the back of the aircraft) is over 16 feet, so you get pretty high off the ground when crawling around.
Before every flight, we have to inspect the aircraft to make sure everything is in place, things aren’t broken, and minor leaks haven’t sprung up in places which will become major leaks in flight… etc. That means crawling around the aircraft… or “pre-flight”. A guy who is used to moving about the aircraft can check the whole aircraft in 10 minutes or less. To watch Lieutenants figure out how to climb up the back of the aircraft for the first time,,, takes 20 minutes for them to get up there to look at one part of the aircraft (= ha ha.
That was me, once upon a time too. I demonstrated how to move about the aircraft a few times for the new guys- so they could learn something the computers don’t teach. Also, training your eye what to look for is an important skill that the computers don’t talk much about.
Today was my first official flight in the training syllabus. 113x is the syllabus code for one of my fam flights (familiarization), meaning the focus of this flight was to go out & practice some basic flying techniques. We flew out to the VSTOL pad (very short take-off & landing) and practiced max gross weight take-offs & landings, hover work, single engine failure emergencies, running landings & take-offs, AFCS off flight, etc…
It’s great to take an aircraft out & put it through it’s paces again. just like yesterday, it was like riding your old bicycle again… a lot of fun. (=
The flight schedule forecast for next week came out, and I’m on for flying everyday next week! (except Monday) Woo-hoo! (= Things are moving fast- but well.
And if that wasn’t exciting enough, when I came home today, Ben’s stuff was gone. He left a smarmy note on the kitchen counter, and instead of the $100 he owes to finish out the rent, he left a check for $50 + his futon frame in the room upstairs (without the mattress part). He’s a piece of work, that kid.
Anyways- he’s out of the house! The air almost feels lighter! The gloom has rolled off the atmosphere, and it’s brighter in here already. (=
