Aside from hanging out with 3 generations of my friendly Balinese family, as they operated the small store in front of the house, cared for the pigs, and patched tires along the side of the road, Pak Suwamana and I jumped on a scooter & rode up to the mountains overlooking Singaraja on the northern coast.

“Indonesian Destinies” mentions Bali falling under Dutch control as late as 1906-1908, after 1,000 members of the royal families attacked colonial forces in suicide rushes, armed with knives and sharp bamboo against Dutch rifles and canon in a ritualistic “cleansing” of their soil symbolic of “live free or die trying”. (pg. 21) Singaraja was the capital of Bali until post Independence, when it was administratively moved to Denpasar (a city on the South side of the island whose name was also changed from something I forgot to jot down).
