It’s a shame that most of the Buddha/Hindu temples are piles of rubble today. Most are reduced to the original floorplan. There is some effort to reconstruct what they used to look like (you can see from new red bricks).
The Malayu kingdom dates from the 7th century and had to fight for its existence between 3 powerful neighbor intrusions: Srivijaya (800-1000, Palembang), Majapahit (1350-1389, Java), and Minankabau (1580-1610, West Sumatra). It was swallowed up 3 times, then re-emerged when the other kingdoms fell. Scrappy.
