An hour later I picked up Nina, and together we launched on my next project (=

As Ibu Bari took me through the bamboo extension of their other home, she explained there are 15 people living there. (8 in their family and 7 from the family across the street). They aren’t brave enough to sleep in the parts of their 2nd house still standing- so all 15 share 3 beds in a small bamboo area in the back. Amazing.

The boys are out everyday helping neighbors fix up their homes in a big, collective effort, the ladies are at home all day with the kids, when they get out of school. They share 4 scooters between the 15 of them.

I was thinking,,, there’s a lot of folks who work hard- and don’t have a lot of spare money for entertainment,, or means. That’s something I can help with.

Nina and I stopped by the same Polytron store where I get Ena’s family DVD player, and got a 2nd gift. It’s a DVD/stereo/karaoke player (= not bad for $130!
Of course, a DVD player is near useless without something to put in it! So Nina and I stopped by a streetside DVD vendor near Malioboro street…

The chances of these movies being bootlegged or pirated is high (= statistically speaking, 87% of all electronics sold in Indonesia are.
However, there were 7 movies on each DVD, for 70 cents each… so I picked up 26.
182 movies & kids cartoons for $18 is a pretty good deal I think. The Bari family will have plenty to choose from (=

The tricky part was carrying it all 18km on the back of Nina’s scooter! (= where there’s a will, there’s a way! The gratitude on their faces was worth all the effort. See for yourself.
