Highlights: Conference on Islam, dinner at Governor’s palace

The International Seminar on “Translating Islam in the multicultural world for Peace, Justice and Welfare” started at 8 in the hotel conference room.

There were 6 panels of 4 speakers each, with presenters hailing from at least 10 different countries. Most of the ones I could understand were pretty interesting. (=

Two Egyptian speakers from Al-Azhar University (Cairo) spoke in Arabic, as did a couple older Indonesian speakers from UIN. The rest were split between Indonesian & English.

Topics were fairly far reaching & interesting: Perspectives of Islamic Law (Bandung); Multiculturalism, Human Rights and Islam from a European Perspective (Belgium); Islam and Pluralism (Germany); Enhancing Persuasion for Peaceful Religious Communication in Plural and Democratic Indonesia (USA); Muslim Women and Interfaith Dialogue in a Multicultural World (Australia); Belavhar va Buzasf: A Cultural Crossroad (Iran)… Professor Brannon Wheeler presentated on ‘Tolerance and the Comparative Study of Religion in Islam’.

Only a few went out of their way to paint America as the source of world problems. Aside from a few minor points I disagreed with, there was always a collegiate atmosphere in the room.

After the conference, I was invited with all of the speakers & conference planners to the Governor’s palace (Gedung Sate) for dinner and a Sundanese cultural performance.
