Nina and I cruised around downtown a little bit, just to see what’s going on. There were definitely festive airs in the evening skies. This is Cepu. It’s a small town, with a lot of oil under it. I think every young person for miles around came out on their scooters tonight to “cruise” the ¼ mile downtown strip.
Drums are a central part of the Idul Fitri celebration- as they have been used over the last 30 days to announce the end of fasting. Correspondingly- there were parties on wheels… with youth commandeered trucks and walking mobs, gleefully banging away on their drums- and chanting Muslim prayers through megaphones & portable karaoke machines. Kids could be found in most of the mosques as well, microphone in hand- giving their best go at the Muslim chants. Sounded like karaoke to me (= I’m sure they were having fun.
