All gassed-up again, we took off East, into the rural East Java countryside of Bojonegoro. Once again, it was a very simple, hard-working, farmer community. Many wood homes again.
I guess I was surprised to see so much wood, because you rarely see wood in Yogya, Solo, Jakarta, Surabaya… even in poor areas… Today brick is cheaper than wood; so it is the primary building ingredient in most homes & buildings. The quality of brick here is different than in the states- but it remains the primary building block in much of Indonesia. Not here though.
