Highlights: a missed invitation, Sunda wedding ceremony in northern Jakarta & seeing my Yogya host family! Dinner out with Brook, Lydia & Monica
I’m not sure if this is a Javanese tradition or Indonesia wide, but after a person dies, they are “remembered” on 5 specific ‘anniversaries’ of their death… something like what I saw in Sinta’s village, north of Yogya. We’re coming up on the 100th day after the Yogya earthquake, and pak Parjiman, the kind English teacher from Bantul, where I volunteered during the debate class a few weeks ago, invited me to his home to “remember” the death of his mother from the earthquake. I consider it a very special invitation & a loss that I’m not able to attend. I’m honored that he thought enough of me to invite me back. I wish I could be in two places at once!

I was also invited to a wedding ceremony today at the Babussalam mosque in Northern Jakarta. The niece of my Yogya host family was getting married, and they flew out to Jakarta to be here. I was mostly excited to see the Rochmadi family again.

This was a Sundanese traditional wedding, slightly different from the wedding I saw in Yogya. I tried to capture the elements here for you (= There are many parts of the traditional wedding ceremony, and I think some take place over a few days. This is the reception.
I had a lot of fun hanging out with Ojik again. ha ha. That was the treat for me. I also got to meet several older/younger brothers & sisters of Ibu & Bapak Rochmadi.
