Highlights: working in Bantul, treating 2 families to the movies
I went back down to Bantul to help out again… my favorite hobby these days. (= I’m excited about seeing the progress from day to day & making a difference- especially one that can be so readily appreciated.
Today’s project, digging our way back to the back of the house.
On my way to Bantul this morning, I stopped at 3 stereo shops, shopping for radios with a cd player (so at least we could listen to music while working…) I found some nice ones that even serve as a mini entertainment center (complete with DVD function) for $100. I would have bought it on the spot- but couldn’t carry it on my scooter by myself. I’ll have to come back tomorrow with reinforcements for that.
A little further down the road, I got a phone call from the states! (Pila) I pulled over to the side of the road in Bantul & sat on an abandoned gas station island in the shade talking for an hour or so,,, and I must have been a strange sight,,, a westerner camped out on the side of the road in this small town- everybody going by smiled & waved… and by the time I hung up the phone- I had met the owners of the gas station (who live there) and heard all about the father who died in the earthquake.
They’re the only Christian family in this area, they mentioned,, and the ordeal they had to go through to bury their father/husband with a cross sounded complicated & frustrating. He is buried 45 minutes away apparently. I haven’t heard much about the mixing of religions in gravesites actually- interesting subject.
After 4 hours or so, I was excited to get back & take my host family out to the movies,,, (to see Asterix),,, and since I was there- I decided to invite my Bantul family as well. It was fun bringing them back to the cinema (their 2nd time ever!) and introducing them to my host family (=
Asterix, for whatever reason, only plays Saturday night at 10pm! So,,, Pirates of the Caribbean it was! And it was just as good for me as it was for everyone…
Another reason to love this country,,, I treated 11 people out to a matinee show today for $16! ahh! Maman & Papa,,, you should really consider retiring out here! (=
