I thought the kids were just being shy at first when I talked to them, and their parents looked-on, laughing,,, but an hour or so later it occurred to me, they haven’t learned bahasa Indonesia yet! They grow up speaking their local language first (bahasa Jawa, here in Yogya & Central Java),, which isn’t even close to the national language.
They start “Indonesian” (bahasa Indonesia) in the 4th grade at public schools. Huh!
So maybe I’m not as scary looking as I thought…
On the way home I stopped & took a few pics of common sights on the main road in Bantul.
